The latest job report for June provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of employment in the United States.
June’s Key Findings
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 147,000 jobs were added in June 2025, aligning closely with the average monthly gain of 146,000 over the past year. This suggests continued steady growth in the labor market. The unemployment rate edged down slightly to 4.1%, signaling a modest improvement in overall employment stability.

Sector-Specific Employment Changes
Employment trends in June 2025 reflected significant growth in public sector education and healthcare, while the federal government continued to experience declines.
Government (State & Local)
Government employment rose by 73,000 jobs. The state government increased by 47,000 jobs, driven primarily by a strong gain in state education (+40,000 jobs). Local government education continued its upward trend as well, adding 23,000 jobs. Conversely, federal government employment declined again by 7,000 jobs, marking a cumulative loss of 69,000 jobs since its recent peak in January.
Healthcare
Healthcare added 39,000 jobs in June, consistent with its 12-month average of 43,000 jobs. Hospitals contributed 16,000 new jobs, while nursing and residential care facilities saw gains of 14,000 jobs, highlighting continued demand for medical and long-term care professionals.
Social Assistance
Social assistance continued its positive momentum, adding 19,000 jobs in June. Most of this growth came from individual and family services (+16,000 jobs), reflecting ongoing community-level demand.

Employment remained largely unchanged across other major industries, including:

Unemployment Rates
The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%, maintaining a narrow band between 4.0% and 4.2% since May 2024. The number of unemployed individuals stood at 7.0 million in June.
Unemployment rates by demographic group:
- Adult men: 3.9%
- Adult women: 3.6%
- Teenagers: 14.4%
- White population: 3.6%
- Black population: 6.8%
- Asian population: 3.5%
- Hispanic population: 4.8%
Long-term unemployment rose by 190,000 to 1.6 million, now representing 23.3% of all unemployed individuals. Meanwhile, the number of individuals unemployed for economic reasons remained unchanged at 4.5 million. The marginally attached labor force grew by 234,000 to 1.8 million, including a notable increase of 256,000 discouraged workers, those who believe no jobs are available for them.
Wage Growth & Average Workweek
Wages continued to trend upward in June, albeit at a slightly slower pace.
- Average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by 0.2% (8 cents) to $36.30.
- Over the past year, earnings have increased by 3.7%, reflecting moderate wage growth.
- For private-sector production and nonsupervisory employees, hourly earnings rose by 9 cents (0.3%) to $31.24.
The average workweek edged down by 0.1 hour to 34.2 hours. In manufacturing, employees maintained an average of 40.1 hours per week with steady overtime at 2.9 hours. For production and nonsupervisory employees, the workweek declined by 0.2 hour to 33.5 hours.
Updates To Prior Months’ Employment Data
Revisions to previous employment figures for April and May reveal slightly stronger growth than initially reported:
- April 2025: Revised up by 11,000 jobs (from +147,000 to +158,000).
- May 2025: Revised up by 5,000 jobs (from +139,000 to +144,000).
Combined, these revisions add 16,000 more jobs to the previously reported totals. These adjustments are based on additional data submissions and recalibrated seasonal models, underlining the importance of treating preliminary figures as subject to change.
